About

Communities In Schools of Seattle (CISS) is part of the nation's leading community-based organization helping kids succeed in school and prepare for life. Established in 1998, it is based on the national Communities In Schools model which has been honored by Worth magazine as one of the “Top 100 Nonprofit Organizations in the U.S.”, as well as one of the “100 Charities That Will Save the World”. CIS is credited as being the largest stay-in-school network in the country. In communities across our state network, local CIS organizations connect resources, services, business partners, parents and volunteers with schools to make it easier for kids and families to get the help they need.

OUR MISSION is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools, to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.

CISS partners with Seattle Public Schools and primarily serves schools in economically disadvantaged areas with a disproportionately high number of ethnic minorities. Over the years CISS has helped hundreds of youth overcome the social, emotional and physical barriers to learning by providing academic support and intervention with students for truancy, inter-student harassment, emotional and family issues, housing and health concerns.

The fundamental beliefs of every CIS program are that every child needs and deserves:
  • A personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

  • A safe place to learn and grow

  • A healthy start in life

  • A marketable skill to use upon graduation

  • A chance to give back to their peers and community
