Volunteer Mission Statement

As an organization rooted in the community, Communities in Schools of Seattle is committed to working with volunteers to provide meaningful ways to serve youth, build the capacity of the organization to effectively involve volunteers, and provide opportunities to bridge communities into the schools. CISS embraces volunteers as partners in fulfilling our mission.
  • We value that volunteers come from various backgrounds, experiences, and possess many talents that contribute to the enrichment of children’s education and creates a stronger link between school and culture for the students we serve. We actively recruit volunteers from all backgrounds and seek to attract volunteers that reflect the cultural diversity of our students.

  • Communities in Schools of Seattle offers a thoughtfully planned and well managed volunteer program. We provide quality orientation and job specific training for all volunteers. Ongoing support and recognition is a commitment of CISS staff.

  • Get Involved!

Think of all the things you could do in just over an hour - your laundry, workout, watch TV...
      How about changing a life?

A small commitment of your time can make a big difference in a child’s life.

    Volunteer Orientation and Training Schedule

    Orientation Dates

Orientation - September TBD Training - September TBD

All volunteers must attend an orientation and training prior to working with students. The trainings are program specific and occur after attending an orientation.

All orientations and trainings are held at the Seattle School District Office 2445 3rd Ave S.

    On-going interaction with students

Reading Buddy – Work one-on-one with 2nd and 3rd grade students. Choose the day and time that works best for you and commit for 15 weeks to work with a specific student. Help them improve their reading and comprehension skills through a structured reading program by Sound Sense Reading Solutions.

Math Tutor - These students are significantly behind in fundamental math skills. Our Math All Stars program understands that children learn better when their having fun. Math is a subject that children and adults alike struggle with. Games are something that most everyone enjoys. So we decided to combine the two!

Through interactive math games we reinforce fundamental math skills: addition, subtraction, counting money, telling time, multiplication, etc. These games are directly correlated to Seattle Schools math curriculum, so they students receive academic reinforcement through play.

As a volunteer, you don't have to worry about how "good" you are at math. You will receive comprehensive training and on-going support. The games are EASY to learn, and some you probably already know!

Meet once a week either Tuesday/Thursday after school from 4:00- 5:30 at Graham Hill Elementary School.
