Fact Sheet

Communities In Schools believes that every child needs and deserves the five basics:
A personal one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
A safe place to learn and grow
A healthy start and a healthy future
A marketable skill to use upon graduation
A chance to give back to their peers and community

Consider this:
  • In a district of approximately 46,000 students, approximately one-third of Seattle students fail to graduate from high school.

  • In 2009 63.4% of Seattle students graduated “on time”, within four years.

  • Washington State is ranked 45th in the nation in spending $7,688 per pupil compared with the national average of $9,963 per pupil.

Communities In Schools of Seattle gets results.
Among the “at-risk” students supported by CISS in 2008-09:
  • 100% of students who received intensive support from CISS were identified as “at-risk” due to low academic performance and/or poor attendance. Many CISS students are several grade levels behind their peers in reading, writing, and math.

  • 86.2% were low-income.

  • 87.8% were ethnic minorities.

  • 76.3% made academic gains.

  • 95% were promoted to the next grade.

  • 96% stayed in school.

  • 91% graduated.

CISS engages the community to enrich the school experience and improve student learning.
  • In 2008-09, CISS provided support to 7,193 students in 19 Seattle schools.

  • 366 volunteers donated 2,321 hours of time in 2008-09.

  • CISS supports schools that have disproportionately higher percentages of: students of color, low-income students, mobile population, truancy, low academic achievement, and drop out rates.

  • In collaboration with 55 partners, CISS provided support such as backpacks and school supplies, tutoring, after-school programs, arts enrichment, mentoring, food, financial literacy, peer support groups, recreation opportunities, positive youth development activities, and much more!

Communities In Schools uses a cost-effective, research-based model that works.
  • The CIS model pairs widely accessible prevention services and resources that enrich the whole school experience, with coordinated, targeted and sustained intervention services and support for students who are most at risk for dropping out.

  • Nationally, CIS has been honored by Worth magazine as one of the “Top 100 Nonprofit Organizations in the U.S.”, as well as one of the “100 Charities That Will Save the World”.

  • CISS spends about $138 per student to implement its model.
